While playing a game of hide and seek at their friend Zee's welcome home party, Justin and his friends get pulled into a shadowy world. They have to confront their worst nightmares as they try to escape the Seeker monster and find their way home.

    The skin on Hyde’s hand is burned and mangled, with deep crisscross scars up to his arm.

    We gawk at him. Say what, now?

    ring or echo with sound
    “A monster, an evil force... It doesn't matter. All you need to know is that it's coming for all of you!” His words reverberate through my body.

    "So, you’re a traitor?” Lyric spits out.
    "If that’s the way you want to think about it,” says Hyde with a dismissive wave of his hand.

    "Zee escaped.”

    "What does that mean?” I ask.
    "Just a question,” he says cryptically.

    Tears fill his haunted eyes and for a brief moment I see that scared ten-year-old kid. He blinks and cold, calculating Hyde returns.

    "Eww, you are so funky.” She shoves me away and shudders, glancing down at her clothes. “Now I’m all gross.”

    I take a bite of orange chicken. Tastes like tangy dirt.

    The orange chicken and rice churn in my stomach.

    My fingers slide over something coarse, with a wavy pattern.

    My stomach lurches, sending up partially digested orange chicken and fried rice.

    An unhuman sound erupts from me as I pry the wood back, ignoring the pain in my palms.

    The colors are faded, muddled. Everything is a little out of focus, like I'm staring through a dirty glass.

    The wind rustles the dead leaves on the trees, and the sound it makes...it's like muffled crying.

    "You’re not my mom.”
    She sneers. "I’m the only mom you’ll ever know.”

    The wind moans and flutters the hospital gown around her frail body.

    With weak arms, I push away from the fence and sluggishly make my way up the driveway past Hyde's ice cream truck.

    Dirty, disheveled hair hangs to her shoulders.

    I glance away and exhale a loud breath to hold back the queasiness bubbling inside me.

    “What is it?” Mary asks warily.
