  1. inflation
    a general and progressive increase in prices
    When merchants realized that coins had less precious metal than before, they raised prices. This caused inflation, or a general rise in the cost of goods.
  2. communication
    the activity of conveying information
    Despite good roads, communication and travel were much slower than they are today.
  3. barbarian
    a member of an uncivilized people
    Romans called the Germans barbarians. This is the word Greeks and Romans used for all people who did not share their cultures.
  4. collapse
    break down, literally or metaphorically
    Rome declined after Constantine's death. Its enemies took advantage of its weakness and caused it to collapse.
  5. mercenary
    a person hired to fight for another country than their own
    They hired mercenaries, or soldiers who fight for pay rather than for their country.
  6. orthodoxy
    the quality of adhering to what is commonly accepted
    Theodosius became a strong supporter of Christian orthodoxy, meaning traditional or established religious beliefs.
  7. strait
    a narrow channel joining two larger bodies of water
    A strait is a narrow body of water that cuts through land, connecting two larger bodies of water.
  8. moat
    ditch dug as a fortification and usually filled with water
    Two rings of thick walls and a moat, or a trench filled with water, protected the city on land.
  9. successor
    a person who follows next in order
    Justinian was his successor.
  10. core
    the choicest or most vital part of some idea or experience
    However, the Byzantine emperors kept control of the core of their empire, modern-day Greece and western Turkey.
  11. missionary
    someone who attempts to convert others to a doctrine
    A missionary is someone who tries to convert others to a particular religion.
  12. creed
    the written body of teachings of a religious group
    They met in the city of Nicea and adopted a statement of beliefs, or a creed, called the Nicene Creed.
  13. icon
    a conventional religious painting in oil on a small panel
    An icon is a holy image, usually a portrait of Jesus or a saint.
  14. iconoclast
    a destroyer of images used in religious worship
    People who opposed icons were called iconoclasts, meaning "image-breakers."
  15. pope
    the head of the Roman Catholic Church
    Over time, however, the bishop of Rome claimed authority over Christians everywhere. He began to be called pope, which means father, or head, of the Church.
  16. unified
    formed or joined into a whole
    He had them produce a unified code, or systematic body of law.
  17. discriminate
    treat differently on the basis of race, sex, religion, etc.
    For example, the code discriminated against Jews and other non-Christians.
