    a particular society at a particular time and place
    A group of people in Southwest Asia known as the Israelites were different. Unlike other cultures of the day, they worshipped only one God.
  2. prophet
    someone who speaks by divine inspiration
    The Israelites believed that God sent prophets, or messengers, to share God's word with the people.
  3. monotheism
    belief in a single God
    The belief in one all-powerful, just, and personal God is called monotheism.
  4. tribe
    group of people related by blood or marriage
    As stated in the Hebrew Bible, Jacob's 12 sons became the leaders of tribes, or separate family groups.
  5. locust
    migratory grasshopper that moves in a swarm
    These plagues were events that caused problems for the Egyptians, such as locusts devouring the fields or outbreaks of disease.
  6. exodus
    a journey by a large group to escape from a hostile environment
    The departure of the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt is known as the Exodus.
  7. covenant
    an agreement between a god and the people
    On their way from Egypt, according to the Hebrew Bible, the Israelites received a covenant, or agreement with God.
  8. commandment
    a doctrine that is taught
    The Torah made clear what God considered to be right and wrong. One important part of the Torah is the Ten Commandments.
  9. extract
    obtain from a substance, as by mechanical action
    This dye was extracted from shellfish along the Phoenician coast.
  10. alphabet
    a set of characters that are used to write a language
    One of the Phoenicians' important contributions was an alphabet, or a group of letters that stand for sounds.
  11. ensure
    make certain of
    The Israelites believed the ark was a sign of God's presence and that having it with them in battle would ensure victory.
  12. psalm
    a sacred song used to praise a deity
    A fine musician and poet, David is believed to have written many of the sacred songs found in the Hebrew Bible's Book of Psalms—also found in the Christian Bible.

    an amount of time
    Through trade and treaties with other peoples, Solomon brought a long period of peace to the region.
  14. proverb
    a condensed but memorable saying embodying an important fact
    He is believed to be the author of proverbs, or wise sayings, that are recorded in the Hebrew Bible.

    These tribes founded a separate kingdom, Israel.
  16. survive
    continue to live through hardship or adversity
    The people of Judah survived the Assyrian conquests, but their freedom did not last.

    expel from a country
    When people are exiled, they are forced to leave their home or country.

    the place of worship for a Jewish congregation
    It is believed that small groups of Jews began to meet at synagogues, or Jewish houses of worship.
  19. tradition
    a specific practice of long standing
    According to tradition, the Sabbath lasts from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
  20. scroll
    a document that can be rolled up (as for storage)
    Led by a scribe named Ezra, the Jews wrote the five books of the Torah on pieces of parchment. They sewed the pieces together to make long scrolls.
  21. communicate
    interchange information or ideas
    God disapproved and made the people speak in different languages. The people could not communicate with one another.
  22. community
    a group of people living in a particular local area
    Because reading the Torah was central to Jewish life, religious teachers became important community leaders.
  23. kosher
    conforming to the dietary laws of Judaism
    Today, food that is prepared according to Jewish dietary laws is called kosher.
  24. diaspora
    the body of Jews outside Palestine or modern Israel
    These groups of Jews living outside of the Jewish homeland became known as the Diaspora. Diaspora is a Greek word that means "scattered."
  25. version
    a translation
    A group of Jewish scholars in Egypt copied the Hebrew Bible into Greek. This Greek version, called the Septuagint, helped people who were not Jews to read and understand the Hebrew Bible.
  26. expand
    make bigger or wider in size, volume, or quantity
    Led by powerful generals, the Romans expanded their empire.
  27. devotion
    religious zeal; the willingness to serve God
    They urged the people to practice the Torah's teachings with greater devotion.
  28. cooperation
    the practice of working together on a common enterprise
    The Sadducees favored cooperation with the Romans.
  29. tension
    feelings of hostility that are not manifest
    As tensions between Romans and Jews in Judaea increased, the Zealots prepared to act.
  30. rabbi
    spiritual leader of a Jewish congregation
    Despite losing their struggle for independence, the Jews regrouped with the help of their rabbis, or religious leaders.
  31. document
    writing that provides information
    Some jars were empty, but in others he found ancient scrolls of leather, papyrus, and copper. These documents, written between 200 B.C. and A.D. 68, are called the Dead Sea scrolls.
