Indeed slavery and segregation have been strange paradoxes in a nation founded on the principle that all men are created equal.

The American dream will not become a reality devoid of the larger dream of a world of brotherhood and peace and good will.

But Lincoln hesitated. He was afraid to alienate the large numbers of Northerners who supported the Union but opposed emancipation.

Since a school is generally attended by the children living in the neighborhood, wherever there were predominantly African-American neighborhoods there were, "in fact," segregated schools.

On May 17, 1954, after deliberating for nearly a year and a half, the Supreme Court made its ruling.

It signaled clearly that the legal prohibitions that oppressed African Americans would have to fall.

And it is a downright mockery to talk to women of their enjoyment of the blessings of liberty while they are denied the use of the only means of securing them provided by this democratic-republicans government—the ballot.

To them this government has no just powers derived from the consent of the governed.

An oligarchy of learning, where the educated govern the ignorant...but this oligarchy of sex, which makes father, brothers, husband, sons, the oligarchs over the mother and sisters, the wife and daughters, of every household—which ordains all men sovereigns, all women subjects, carries dissension, discord, and rebellion into every home of the nation.

Farm workers are not agricultural implements—they are not beasts of burden to be used and discarded.

It grew from the frustration and humiliation I felt as a boy who couldn't understand how the growers could abuse and exploit farm workers when there were so many of us and so few of them.

The UFW was the beginning! We attacked that historical source of shame and infamy that our people in this country lived with.
