  1. possess
enter into and control, as of emotions or ideas
“You’re a spirit from the Underworld,” Piper guessed. “You’re possessing Percy Jackson. Is that it?”
  2. control
    exercise authoritative power over
Percy sneered. “I will live again in this body. The Earth Mother has promised. I will go where I please, control whom I wish.”
  3. tribute
something given or done as an expression of esteem
“I don’t think we should count on his help this time. He wanted a tribute, and he made it pretty clear it would be a tribute we couldn’t handle.”
  4. vision
    a vivid mental image
On the other hand, if the vision of Bacchus offering her a silver goblet was false, maybe the other visions didn’t have to come true either—especially the one of her, Percy, and Jason drowning.
  5. suggest
make a proposal; declare a plan for something
“I don’t know,” Percy said. “But until we figure it out, I suggest we all try to avoid getting captured.”
  6. faith
complete confidence in a person or plan, etc.
She was rapidly losing faith in her plan. She’d made the eidolons appear, but what now?
  7. command
exercise authoritative control or power over
“Listen, eidolons,” Hazel said sternly, “you do not belong here. I may not command you, but Piper does. Obey her.”
  8. confer
have a meeting in order to talk something over
Leo stood at the helm, conferring with Festus through the intercom; he knew from experience to give Jason and Piper some space.
  9. imagine
    expect, believe, or suppose
She couldn’t imagine anything that would make Annabeth suddenly turn vengeful.
Then again, Piper couldn’t imagine choosing one demigod’s life over another, and today on that deserted road, just for a moment, Gaea had almost tempted her....
  10. suspect
imagine to be the case or true or probable
But he also suspected that if he didn’t control the fear, it might start controlling him.
  11. meditate
think intently and at length, as for spiritual purposes
The air was turning poisonous. Nico’s eyes were closed, his breathing shallow. He appeared to be meditating.
  12. discussion
an extended communication dealing with a particular topic
The meeting was like a war council with donuts. Then again, back at Camp Half-Blood they used to have their most serious discussions around the Ping-Pong table in the rec room with crackers and Cheez Whiz, so Percy felt right at home.
  13. lure
provoke someone to do something through persuasion
“The giants are trying to lure us,” Annabeth said. “They’re assuming we’ll try to rescue him.”
  14. loyalty
    feelings of allegiance
I remember Nico from Camp Jupiter. Now I find out he also visited Camp Half-Blood. That does strike me as . . . well, a little shady. Do we really know where his loyalties lie? We just have to be careful.
  15. cautious
    showing careful forethought
    “Cold? I’m just being cautious!”
  16. occur
    come to one's mind
It hadn’t occurred to Percy that they might have to pay admission, or stand in line behind a bunch of families and kids from summer camps.
  17. ponder
    reflect deeply on a subject
He was pondering whether or not they could sneak in somehow, when a woman in a blue-and-green Georgia Aquarium shirt came up to them, smiling brightly.
  18. irrational
not consistent with or using reason
They passed through an acrylic tunnel. Fish swam over their heads, and Percy felt irrational panic building in his throat.
  19. strategy
an elaborate and systematic plan of action
This felt like a divide-and-conquer strategy.
  20. lecture
an educational talk delivered by a teacher in a classroom
Percy tried to think, but he was starting to get a headache. He wasn’t sure if it was from yesterday’s head injury, Phorcys’s special effects, or his sister’s lectures on nauseating sea monster facts.
  21. layer
    a level
“Well. . . Mother’s plans always have lots of layers.” He laughed. “The earth has layers! I suppose that makes sense!”
  22. obvious
easily perceived by the senses or grasped by the mind
“Yes, the MAP IN CHARLESTON,” Frank said loudly, giving Percy a wide-eyed look to make sure he hadn’t missed the information. He couldn’t have been more obvious if he had held up a large sign that read CLUE!!!!!
  23. phobia
an anxiety disorder characterized by irrational fear
It’s just a stupid phobia, he assured himself. I’m not going to drown.
  24. telepathic
    communicating without apparent physical signals
I’m having a telepathic conversation with a giant koi, Percy said. Great. Can you turn into something more … useful?
  25. charade
a word acted out in an episode of a game
On three, Percy mouthed, holding up three fingers and then gesturing at the glass. All of us hit it at the same time. Percy had never been good at charades, but Hedge nodded like he understood.
  26. respond
    react favorably or as hoped
Given time, water could overcome any barrier, and it hated to be trapped, just like Percy. He thought about getting back to Annabeth. He thought about destroying this horrible prison for sea creatures. He thought about shoving Phorcys’s microphone down his ugly throat. Fifty thousand gallons of water responded to his anger.
  27. agitate
    be an advocate for
Everyone looked at Annabeth. Her scalp tingled, as if the thoughts in her brain were agitating to get out: a statue . . . Athena... Greek and Roman, her nightmares, and her argument with her mom. She saw how the pieces were coming together, but she couldn’t believe it was true.
  28. source
    a person who supplies information
After their experience with the eidolons, she didn’t like the idea of approaching a ghost, especially one that changed people with bad news or prophecies. On the other hand, her mom was the goddess of knowledge, and knowledge was the most powerful weapon. Annabeth couldn’t turn down a possible source of information.
  29. decoy
something used to lure fish or other animals
But the eagles would overtake us, and things would get complicated. Instead, we could send out a decoy to trick the eagles.
  30. detour
    a roundabout road or route
I’m gonna calculate our detour route now.
  31. complex
    complicated in structure
“I must return home,” Athena murmured, studying the map. “The way is complex. I wish Odysseus were here. He would understand.”
  32. simple
having few parts; not complex or complicated or involved
“Many of the best traps are simple,” Annabeth said. “You just have to think about it, and hope your victim doesn’t.”
  33. philosophical
relating to the investigation of existence and knowledge
Percy would hate her getting so philosophical. If she tried to talk to him about stuff like that, his eyes glazed over.
  34. architect
someone who creates plans to be used in making something
She felt like nobody took her seriously as a blonde. She had to work twice as hard to get recognition as a strategist, an architect, a senior counselor—anything that had to do with brains.
  35. calculated
    carefully thought out in advance
Everything about her seemed calculated to make Annabeth feel inadequate: the easy grace with which she wore her dress, the perfect yet understated makeup, the way she radiated feminine charm that no man could possibly resist.
  36. levelheaded
    exercising or showing good judgment
Her own mother, the most levelheaded Olympian, was reduced to a raving, vicious scatterbrain in a subway station. And of all the gods who might help them, the only ones not affected by the Greek-Roman schism seemed to be Aphrodite, Nemesis, and Dionysus. Love, revenge, wine. Very helpful.
  37. orchestrate
plan and direct (a complex undertaking)
None has succeeded in recovering the statue. In the meantime, they’ve been keeping alive the Greek feud with the Romans. Every civil war . . . so much bloodshed and heartbreak... has been orchestrated largely by Athena’s children.
  38. conscious
    intentionally conceived
I don’t believe Athena created the Mark consciously. If she knew where her statue was, she’d simply tell you where to find it. No ... I’d guess the Mark is more like a spiritual trail of bread crumbs. It’s a connection between the statue and the children of the goddess.
  39. grudge
a resentment strong enough to justify retaliation
“This grudge between our camps ... I can fix it.”
“Our grudge is thousands of years old. How can one person fix it?”
  40. schematic
diagram of an electrical or mechanical system
Annabeth wished she could give a convincing answer, show Reyna a 3-D diagram or a brilliant schematic, but she couldn’t. She just knew she had to try.
