    It’s a full week’s ride to Ja-A-1, our destination and the nearest settlement to Snowglobe, and we’ll be riding in a passenger cab that doubles as the engineer’s spartan living quarters, like we did with Ongi.

    I stare back in a silent warning, and the engineer jabbers on, “Family, money, friends, looks…put her in a burlap sack, Haeri would still look perfectly put together. If I could choose to be anyone, it would be her, for sure. She’s the whole package.” She sighs dreamily, then lets her rhapsody trail off. “Almost too good to be true.”

    “Haeri?” she murmurs. A consummate professional, she quickly recovers and continues delivering a sort of blow-by-blow of the news.

    As for me, yes, the woman sweet-talked me into believing that I’d be correcting the course of Haeri’s life for everyone’s sake. But that was just gravy. In my heart, I’d already accepted the deal Somyung had categorically rejected.

    “Do you even know which one I am?” This time, she considers the question a moment, or pretends to. Then, leaning forward languidly, she props her elbows on the counter.

    perplexed by many conflicting situations or statements
    She gives me a long, bemused look. Then she laughs sardonically. “You can’t stand being told what to do, can you? You’re all so similar, though I should have known.”

    Not having a penny among us, we’re living purely on the Yibonns’ largesse; they even pay for the stationery and stamps we need to communicate with our families back home, at least for those of us who have any.

    After some hesitation, I venture, “Yeosu’s diary…is it real?”
    Her diary was epistolary in form, as in, each entry was a letter she had written to a confidant, imaginary or real.
