    The coastal waters were thick with a type of seaweed called kelp.

    The poison tide might be similar to red tides, the harmful blooms of algae that can occur in the ocean.

    She also felt determination. Roz was determined to make things better, and she started by calling for an emergency meeting.

    Gale and Swooper fluttered down from the sky. Nettle and Thorn lumbered across a meadow.

    Dredge the bottom of every pond. Make them as deep as you can!

    Trenches were carved into the ground, diverting water from the river to the many deep pits that had been dug.
  19. plume

    Plumes of smoke billowed up to the clouds.
  20. diminish

    At last, rain. A drizzle, not a downpour. Very slowly, the blaze diminished.

    Hours after the wildfire had ignited, the worst was over, but for days afterward, wisps of smoke continued rising from the ashes.

    For generations, through grueling journeys and harsh weather, their flock had been united.

    Roz marched over to see what all the fuss was about, and as she went, she began to hear squeaking and splashing, and through the foliage she caught glimpses of otters leaping off the beaver dam and into the water.

    She glared at her husband and said, “Remember how you asked me to point out when you’re being stubborn and rude? Well, you’re being stubborn and rude!”

    set at a high angle (of a slope)
    I grasped at the muddy ground, but the sides were steep and slippery, and I just kept sinking. I could not believe how deep it was.
  28. submerged
    beneath the surface of the water
    She kept stepping down, and more of her body disappeared into the poison tide until she was completely submerged.
  29. eerie
    inspiring a feeling of fear; strange and frightening
    Her headlights lit up the water, casting an eerie glow on the surrounding rocks. It was a frightening scene, and the goose felt a flicker of panic.

    Overwhelmed by his feelings, he dunked his head in the water to cool off, and when he lifted it back up, he felt a little better.
