  2. carabiner

I checked out the carabiners, metal loops that would keep us attached to the ropes on the mountain. Hard to believe that our lives could depend on something so small.
  3. sustain

When we climbed Denali we’d be totally self- sustained, meaning no porters like on Kilimanjaro or mules like on Aconcagua. We had to transport everything ourselves to multiple camps.

summon up, call forth, or bring together
And I’d need every little bit of strength I could muster to be ready for Denali.

The guide still seemed a little incredulous.

“You'll have to learn to rappel," he said.
I knew what rappelling was—a descent down a rock wall using a rope.
  16. regimen
    a systematic plan for therapy
No surprise, by the end of the day Dad and Karen had come up with a new training regimen. Instead of hauling a tire up and down the mountain to build strength and endurance, I now had to master true rock-climbing skills and build upper-body strength.

The day we were going to leave, there was a horrible terrorist bombing of several major hotels in Jakarta. The US State Department issued a travel advisory warning US citizens against going there.

Dad sat at the breakfast counter, thrumming his fingers.
  22. itinerary
