  1. debate
    a discussion with reasons for and against some proposal
    With other students, form two small groups, the Roundheads and the Cavaliers, and debate the following resolution: A king rules by divine right and cannot be deposed.
  2. conceit
    an elaborate poetic image comparing very dissimilar things
    Conceits are extended comparisons that link objects or ideas not commonly associated. For example, Donne compares two lovers to the two legs of a drawing compass.
  3. paradox
    a statement that contradicts itself
    Paradoxes are images or descriptions that appear self-contradictory but that reveal a deeper truth: "Death, thou shalt die."
  4. lyric
    a short poem of songlike quality
    A lyric is a brief melodic poem that expresses personal thoughts or feelings.
  5. epigram
    a witty saying
    It is natural, therefore, that Jonson used an ancient Greek form called an epigram (from the Greek for "inscription").
  6. analogy
    drawing a comparison in order to show a similarity
    Analogies show the relationships between pairs of words.
  7. synonym
    a word that expresses the same or similar meaning
    A synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another word.
  8. context
    discourse that surrounds and helps explain a word or passage
    Compare the meaning of each underlined vocabulary word with its context, or surrounding words, to determine whether the statement is true or false.
  9. comparative
    the form of an adjective or adverb with "more" or "-er"
    The comparative degree is for comparing two persons, places, or things.
  10. superlative
    the form of a word denoting the greatest degree or extent
    The superlative is for comparing three or more.
  11. participle
    a form of the verb used as an adjective
    A participle is a verb form, usually ending in -ing or -ed, that can be used as an adjective.
  12. gerund
    a noun formed from a verb
    A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing that acts as a noun.
  13. infinitive
    the uninflected form of the verb
    An infinitive is a verb form that appears with the word to and acts as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb.
  14. phrase
    an expression consisting of one or more words
    You can add modifiers and complements to these verb forms to make phrases, or groups of words without a subject or a verb.
