    The characters’ actions and goals can help readers determine theme.
  14. plot
    the story that is told, as in a novel, play, movie, etc.
    The plot also helps develop a text’s theme.

    a word that modifies something other than a noun
    Adverbs tell where, when, or how an action happens.
  16. conjunctive
    serving or tending to connect
    A conjunctive adverb shows a relationship between ideas within a sentence.
  17. prediction
    a statement made about the future
    Before you read, make predictions about themes in the text based on the text features and genre.
  18. inference
    a conclusion you can draw based on known evidence
    While reading, readers make inferences, or figure out information that is not stated directly in the text.
  19. confirm
    establish or strengthen as with new evidence or facts
    After reading, go back to the text to confirm, or make sure, that your predictions were correct.
  20. part of speech
    a class of words distinguished by its function in a sentence
    Parts of speech are categories of words.
  21. noun
    a content word referring to a person, place, thing or action
    Nouns name a person, place, thing, idea, or feeling.
  22. verb
    a word denoting an action, occurrence, or state of existence
    Verbs can show action, either physical or mental.
  23. adjective
    the word class that qualifies nouns
    Adjectives describe people, places, things, ideas, or feelings.
  24. syllable
    a unit of spoken language larger than a phoneme
    A syllable is a word part that contains a single vowel sound. Words with
    multiple syllables contain different syllable patterns.
