    A writer's distinctive style is referred to as voice, and it can be influenced by word choice, sentence structure (the way the author constructs a sentence), and tone—the writer's attitude toward his or her subject.

    The tone of a literary work is the writer's attitude toward his or her audience and subject.

    The resolution is the outcome of the conflict in a plot.

    a vivid verbal description
    Characterization is the process that writers use to develop their descriptions of people.
  16. connotation
    an idea that is implied or suggested
    A connotation is an association or feeling that a word suggests in addition to its literal dictionary definition, or denotation.
  17. denotation
    the most direct or specific meaning of a word or expression
    The denotation of a word is its dictionary meaning, independent of other associations, that the word may have.
  18. symbol
    something visible that represents something invisible
    A symbol is anything—an object, person, animal, place, or situation—that represents something else.
  19. theme
    a unifying idea that is a recurrent element in literary work
    A theme is a central message in a literary work that can usually be expressed in a general statement about human beings or about life.
  20. rhythm
    alternation of stressed and unstressed elements in speech
    Rhythm is the pattern of strong and weak beats in spoken or written language.
  21. repetition
    the continued use of the same word or word pattern
    Repetition is the repeated use of any element of language.

    Sensory language is writing or speech that appeals to one or more of the five senses.
