Before he was convicted of a terrible crime, Luke and his best friend Toby dreamed of escaping their small town. Moving between Luke's letters to Toby from prison and flashbacks to the boys' senior year of high school, this novel explores the challenges and choices that led Luke to death row.

    The next time Toby came by—be it a beating or because Lily had dropped him in the way Luke knew she would—he would meet him with indifference for the first time in their lives.

    As he was standing there, the tall, rangy guy joined Toby and Lily, giving Luke the eye.

    Luke looked at Toby, gauging his reaction to Lily’s words.

    Even if the deputies didn’t believe their convenient account, even if Toby wouldn’t say a word to implicate Luke, it didn’t matter.

    It was a sudden torrential rain, overfilling the river, and Toby couldn’t stop the water from coming over the banks.

    All of Toby’s bluster was gone.

    “I’m in,” Toby said, wanting to skip all the pretense.
  18. proverb
    a condensed but memorable saying embodying an important fact
    He rubbed his chin, like he was pondering an ancient proverb.

    Lily’s righteousness faded.

    in a hesitant manner
    Lily reached her hand toward Toby tentatively.

    The sheer size of the rig stopped him in his tracks.

    Jimmy swung the tire iron again, cleaving off the nose in one swipe.

    “You may want to join us in here,” he said, using the Bible to punctuate the sentence.
  30. distraught
    deeply agitated especially from emotion
    Annie sat up, her face going from distraught to seriously pissed in a matter of seconds.
