    of a stern or strict bearing or demeanor
    Definition: Very simple with no extra decoration.
    Sentence: The offices were cool, austere, and so quiet she could hear herself breathing. The main colors were gray and brown, as if the decorator had been deathly afraid of color.

    make fit for, or change to suit a new purpose
    Definiton: to adjust to different conditions;Sentence: Over millions of years, species of plants and animals have adapted to the environmental conditions in which they live.

  3. compete
    engage in a contest or measure oneself against others
    Definition: To try to win; Sentence: In early Greek culture, religious festivals were changed to drama competitions.
    Competition in ecosysstems happens among organisims that obtain their food in similar ways.

    Definiton: To keep on trying, even when it is difficult. Sentence: If you persist in talking during instruction others will not be able to benefit from it.
  5. curtail
    terminate or abbreviate before its intended or proper end
    Definition: To cut down or reduce. Sentence: Students must curtail their interactions during class so that they can obtain their goals for high school and post secondary education.
  6. skeptical
    marked by or given to doubt
    Definition: Doubt or unbelief. Sentence: Many people were skeptical about the places that Marco Polo claimed he visited.
  7. integral
    existing as an essential constituent or characteristic
    Definition: necessary for something to be whole. Sentence: The kitchen is an integral part of a house.
    A plants leaves are integral to the role that a plant plays in its ecosystem.
  8. distraught
    deeply agitated especially from emotion
    Definition: Very upset; Sentence: Many people whose homes were flooded were distraught to find that all of their things were ruined.
  9. repulsive
    offensive to the mind or senses
    Definition: Causing extreme dislike; Sentence: I think eating liver is so repulsive that I can hardly think of it without getting ill.
  10. forlorn
    marked by or showing hopelessness
    Definition: Very unhappy because of being lost or lonely; Sentence: She was so forlorn when her best friend moved across the country.
  11. verify
    confirm the truth of
    Definiton: to prove the truth of; Sentence: Since his death, scholars have been able to verify much of the information that Marco Plol collected.
  12. deliberate
    carefully thought out in advance
    Definition: carefully thought out or planned.
    Sentence: She moved at a deliberate pace down the hall to make sure she got to her class on time.
  13. exuberant
    joyously unrestrained
    Definition: having lots of enthusiasm or joy.
    Sentence: I was exuberant when all the students passed their vocabulary quiz.
  14. pretentious
    creating an appearance of importance or distinction
    Definition: showing off; trying to get lots of attention.
    Sentence: He looked a little pretentious driving through town in his new convertible.
  15. misconception
    an incorrect assumption
    Definition: a false or mistaken idea.
    Sentence: Students sometimes have the misconception that you can do well in school without studying.
  16. cognition
    the psychological result of perception and reasoning
    Definition: The mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment. Sentence: All students should remain cognitively present during class.
