    “Do you want to drive?” I stretch out my hand with my keys in my palm. I almost snatch my hand back the second I say it because I never let anyone drive my car and it feels overwhelmingly vulnerable the moment the words are out of my mouth.

    disappointingly unsuccessful
    Jacob, surprisingly, shakes his head. I blink. Grand gesture thwarted.
  3. connotation
    an idea that is implied or suggested
    Seeing my widened eyes, he seems to latch on to the connotations of what he just said and his cheeks flush pink.
  4. resolute
    firm in purpose or belief
    Unyielding and resolute as he says, “That boy was wrong.”
  5. amends

    He’s just happy I am making amends.

  7. insinuation
    an indirect (and usually malicious) implication
    For the insinuation of being his girlfriend to cause such alarm, I could almost feel insulted but I’m not.

    show submission or fear
    Derek is used to people stepping back. He is used to people cowering.
  9. relent
    give in, as to influence or pressure
    ...for this moment and this moment only, I like him because it’s his words that make Derek relent.
  10. livid
    furiously angry
    Derek is livid as he gets out of the car, but he can’t say anything.
  11. assert
    state categorically
    “Remember if we don’t like him, then he’s no good. This is a democracy,” Monster asserts.
  12. reprimand
    an act or expression of criticism and censure
    He doesn’t need to sneak out anywhere, but when we race we sneak out together to avoid Papi’s reprimands.
  13. nondescript
    lacking distinct or individual characteristics
    And there in the bland, nondescript font, it says that the house is set for auction.
  14. fanfare
    a gaudy outward display
    Why couldn’t they act normal? Civilized? And nothing like themselves and just let us scoot into the house without any fanfare.
  15. imperceptible
    impossible or difficult to sense
    I see Jacob tower over everyone in the crew and see the imperceptible shake of his head.
