    There are moments of light on this journey, but they can be fleeting.

    Alice and Curly had just scrounged up enough money to buy this place in the middle of nowhere.

    Alice saw me first, then told Curly to pull over. They asked me if I was all right, but I didn’t answer. Then, after a couple tries, Alice had the intuition that maybe I didn’t speak English.

    It wasn’t until about half an hour searching through the grassy fields near the road that I realized they had misinterpreted what I had said. I had said “perdido” like “lost,” not “perrito” like a “dog,” and we all had a good laugh.

    Is Alberto back to his sulky ways? Actually, he visits Vero and Gonzalo in Los Angeles and has plans to do a school-wide presentation at Montverde Middle School!
