    contract involuntarily, as in a spasm
    Her eyes roll back and convulse like milk bubbling over the stovetop.
  9. tendril
    something long, light, slender, and often curling
    The school’s giant windows continue to flash in neon purple. Not a flash of orange, or a single tendril of smoke.
  10. audacity
    aggressive or outright boldness
    Marshall doesn’t glower or grin. He leans in and has the audacity to look sad.
  11. wizened
    lean and wrinkled by shrinkage as from age or illness
    Marshall’s perfect face flickers—for a second. A wizened gash for a nose. Dead milky eyes. And then it’s gone, and Marshall is back. But I’ve seen him and he knows it.
  12. compulsive
    having obsessive habits or irresistible urges
    “What would you say, Colin, if I told you I was really insecure about my compulsive need to dribble—but I have to because it helps me process information?”
  13. righteous
    morally justified
    And you’d call and we’d talk in hushed voices about our favorite parts—the righteous anger you felt when I loved something you hated, when I cobbled together the perfect argument for why you were wrong.
  14. conduit
    a means of transmitting or distributing something, such as information
    Was it the sparkly vampires I came back for? Or was it this sharing? Connecting? A conduit. That’s the occult term for it. Were these books, these dreams, these childish things, were they conduits?
  15. occult
    supernatural forces and events and beings collectively
    That’s the occult term for it.
