  1. camaraderie
the quality of affording easy familiarity and sociability
All the other kids at the Academy had a camaraderie with one another that I just hadn’t been able to achieve, and I was pretty sure it was because I wasn’t a part of their inside jokes about the cold showers or the tiny closets.

His shoulder pressed against mine and I leaned into it a little in some kind of unspoken solidarity.

“The Academy has its wall and security detail, but it is still too conspicuous.”

Grabbing Elliot’s hand, I began a painstakingly slow creep down the line of soldiers.
  8. bedraggled
    limp, untidy, and soiled
I turned back to watch the miracle man as he surveyed his bedraggled troops, his young face pinched with worry.
  9. speculation
a hypothesis that has been formed by conjecturing
“That is correct,” said Callaway. “Now, this is all speculation and educated guesses, but it is safe to say that Colonel Chamberlain, from his one decision to charge instead of retreat, changed the course of history.”
  10. imperative
    requiring attention or action
“We are training you to be thrust into situations where thinking on your feet is not only imperative, but life or death.”
  11. expansive

As I walked between the shelves, it was easy to imagine I was back in the palatial Academy library with its levels upon levels of books.
  13. glower
look angry or sullen as if to signal disapproval
I glowered over my book at the other partners as they cheerily talked through what they read and took turns quizzing one another.
  14. forgo
do without or cease to hold or adhere to
I glanced behind them to see that Regan had apparently decided to forgo lunch to sit over in the simulation section by herself, the gigantic copy of All the Gallant Men open on her lap.
  15. animosity
a feeling of ill will arousing active hostility
“It’s a peace offering. You know, for before,” I said, flapping a hand that I hoped encompassed twelve years of general rudeness and animosity.
