In this first book of the Nic Blake and the Remarkables series, twelve-year-old Alexis Nichole Blake is an exile in the Unremarkable world who wants to learn how to use her Gift as a Manifestor, which includes controlling the elements, summoning objects, and creating illusions.

    A huge sculpture that resembles fettuccini noodles is suspended from the ceiling.
  2. martyr
    one who suffers for the sake of principle
    On the walls there are photos of civil rights leaders, and below the photos there are names of civil rights martyrs from Mississippi.
  3. ignorant
    uneducated in general; lacking knowledge or sophistication
    I never want you to live in fear or think that every person who doesn’t look like you hates you. But there are ignorant people who make assumptions about us because of the color of our skin.
  4. depict
    give a description of
    “Good thing the museum is depicting them accurately,” Dad says. “Accurate representation matters when it comes to real folks.”
  5. prophesy
    predict or reveal, as if through divine inspiration
    “Centuries ago, it was prophesied that one day there will be a Manifestor who will destroy the Remarkable world. This person is called the Manowari, the destroyer.”
  6. assume
    take to be the case or to be true
    Remarkables have tried to predict what will happen, when it’ll happen, how it’ll happen for hundreds of years. When Roho rose, everyone assumed he was the Manowari.
  7. signify
    make known with a word or signal
    There are twelve signs that will signify who the true Manowari is, and no one has fulfilled all twelve.
  8. cobbler
    a pie made of fruit with rich biscuit dough on top
    The aroma of Mississippi-style gumbo, shrimp and grits, and peach cobbler cinnamon rolls is enough to make me hungry too, but JP doesn’t seem to care about food.
  9. gumbo
    a soup or stew thickened with okra pods
    This one took some poor woman’s skin, and her job in the café. Maybe the Boo Hag likes gumbo.

    a slow speech pattern with prolonged vowels
    “I don’t know what y’all see,” a thick Southern drawl says, “but I see some new skins.”
  11. slug
    a land-dwelling mollusk with no external shell
    The effect is instantaneous, like salt on a slug. The Boo Hag screams as her nose melts away, revealing red muscle underneath.
  12. briny
    slightly salty
    A geyser shoots outta the floor, drenching me, the Boo Hag, and JP under the table. Some of it gets in my mouth, filling it with a briny taste. Salt water.
  13. thrash
    move or stir about violently
    The Boo Hag howls and thrashes as the skin melts into the tiled floor.
  14. convulse
    contract involuntarily, as in a spasm
    A lightning bolt comes next. It zaps Uncle Ty with a loud, sizzling crack, and he convulses to the floor. Another hits Dad and sends him into spasms as he drops.
  15. stagger
    walk with great difficulty
    I watch Dad stagger to his feet.
  16. complexion
    the coloring of a person's face
    The woman has my face, my complexion that’s lighter than Dad’s, my thick, curly hair.
  17. curator
    the custodian of a collection, as a museum or library
    Cops, firefighters, and paramedics crowd the outside of the museum to check out the earthquake damage. A local news truck has already arrived.
    “What do you mean the earthquake only happened here?” I overhear one of the curators say.
  18. matte
    not reflecting light; not glossy
    The doors and the top half are tinted glass, and the bottom is matte black.
  19. scoff
    laugh at with contempt and derision
    “You think I have it?”
    She scoffs. “Don’t play innocent. One of the most powerful weapons in the world disappeared the same night you and Alexis did—”
  20. holographic
    of or relating to 3D projected images
    The air in front of me shimmers. Curly black hair appears first, then a brown forehead and eyes closed tight behind a pair of holographic glasses.
  21. sheepishly
    in a manner showing embarrassment or shame
    “Okay, okay, I hid in your trunk,” he says sheepishly.
  22. appropriate
    suitable for a particular person, place, or situation
    “Wow, you really do look like Mom. Grandma said you probably would. I’d say nice to meet you, but ‘remeet you’ feels more appropriate.”
  23. reap
    gather, as of natural products
    To get her dad’s permission to marry her, he had to clear sixty acres of land in half a day, then plant and reap sixty acres of corn the other half.
  24. facility
    a building or place that provides a particular service
    After Roho was defeated, LORE kept the Msaidizi in a secured facility.
  25. bound
    very likely; almost certain to happen
    They kept pulling and pulling, and I knew if they tugged any harder, I was bound to break.

    “No. I couldn’t sleep anyway.”
    “Me either,” she says, wringing her hands.
  27. primitive
    belonging to an early stage of technical development
    Though from the looks of their primitive nature, I doubt Unremarkables possess the advanced technology for diverse habitation.
  28. distraught
    deeply agitated especially from emotion
    From what we’ve been told, the recently divorced Ms. DuForte and Mr. Blake have been going through a nasty custody battle that seems to have reached a fever pitch with tonight’s kidnapping. Though the Guardian force went after Blake, he managed to escape Uhuru. I spoke with the distraught mother earlier.
  29. overwhelm
    overcome, as with emotions or perceptual stimuli
    Seems like nothing about my life before was true.
    Alex turns off the hologram and sits beside me. “Sorry if I overwhelmed you.”
  30. mode
    a particular functioning condition or arrangement
    One icon called X-ray mode flashes green. I look at the trees and houses, and I can see through them.
  31. premises
    land and the buildings on it
    “Ma’am? There’s no sign of the Msaidizi or the twins. We searched the entire premises.”
  32. accomplice
    a person who joins with another in carrying out some plan
    I’d bet these two were accomplices somehow. I’ve got several theories of my own, but the fact remains that it was taken from Uhuru the same night you left.
  33. resent
    feel bitter or indignant about
    “You’re friends with an Unremarkable?” Alex says the word like it tastes bad. “Geez, Mom should’ve rescued you a long time ago.”
    JP narrows his eyes. “I don’t know what that means, but I resent it.”

    “Wizards and magic are a touchier subject we won’t get into.”
  35. statute
    an act passed by a legislative body
    “We shouldn’t be getting into any of this!” Alex says. “According to the statute of—”
