    A strong sterile smell hits me in a wave all at once, just as a middle-aged lady in a white coat enters the room.

    She runs her fingers down my cheeks, across my forehead. I nod again, feeling frozen in place, like a slab of meat on a cutting board, being poked and prodded.

    The ache in my head grows and what should be an easy answer eludes me.

    “Her brain has undergone a major trauma. This isn’t abnormal. Sometimes it just takes some time. We need to be patient with her.”

    the entrance for passing through a room or building
    There’s a creak in the doorway and I jump when I see a girl standing just outside the threshold, in the hallway.

    become smaller or draw together
    I watch her eyes light up and a smile spread across her face as her chest expands and contracts under the fluorescent lights.
  35. magnitude
    relative importance
    I stutter around my thoughts for a few seconds, but then I realize the magnitude of what he’s saying. She’s responsible for me being alive.
