  1. absolute value
a real number regardless of its sign
We use the absolute value symbol to indicate that the length is a positive number because the absolute value of any number is positive. College Algebra with Corequisite Support
  2. constant
a number representing a quantity with a fixed value
Also, there is still one of the original problems that Hubble was designed to help solve, which is determining how fast the universe is expanding—something called the Hubble constant. Scientific American (Apr 27, 2020)
  3. conversion
a change in the units or form of an expression
A sudden conversion of a large amount of cryptocurrency can also be dangerous, causing the price of the coin to collapse as it’s turned into dollars. New York Times (Feb 7, 2022)
  4. domain
a set of possible values of the independent variable
When a finite sequence is defined by a formula, its domain is a subset of the non-negative integers. College Algebra
  5. exponential
involving a quantity being multiplied by itself
The curve of growth can be plotted as an exponential line—1, 2-, 4-, 8-, 16-fold growth—until the culture turns turbid, and the sugar source has been exhausted. The Gene
  6. intercept
the point at which a line intersects a coordinate axis
We will take a look at a few applications here so you can see how equations written in slope–intercept form describe real world situations. College Algebra with Corequisite Support
  7. inverse
opposite in nature or effect or relation to another quantity
There is a curious inverse relationship in modern physics between the tininess of the thing being sought and the scale of facilities required to do the searching. A Short History of Nearly Everything
  8. logarithm
the exponent required to produce a given number
The logarithm of a number is simply the power to which 10 must be raised to equal the number in question. Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and Its Consequences
  9. matrix
an array of quantities set out by rows and columns
Blue Team had their databases and matrixes and methodologies for systematically understanding the intentions and capabilities of the enemy. Blink
  10. quadrant
any of the four areas into which a plane is divided
Her solution, artistic rather than mathematical, is to divide a square into four quadrants with curving figures within. Washington Post (May 24, 2019)
  11. radical
a quantity expressed as the root of another quantity
Since squaring a quantity and taking a square root are ‘opposite’ operations, we will square both sides in order to remove the radical sign and solve for the variable inside. Elementary Algebra
  12. slope
the property of a line that departs from the horizontal
It is possible to calculate implied volatility over a two-year period, creating a slope akin to the yield curve, which measures interest rates for different lending durations. Economist (Jan 25, 2018)
  13. transformation
a change in the position of a figure on a coordinate plane
If you performed such a “parity” transformation on a clock, for example, the weird mirror-image clock that would result would tick just like the original one. Science Magazine (Feb 5, 2021)
  14. variable
a symbol that is used in mathematical or logical expressions
She worked through every minute of what was programmed to be a three-orbit mission, coming up with numbers for eleven different output variables, each computed to eight significant digits. Hidden Figures
  15. vector
a quantity that has magnitude and direction
Spin is a vector with a direction as well as a magnitude, and it is often represented by an arrow, ↑ or ↓, for example. Scientific American (Mar 15, 2022)
