  3. subject
    some situation or event that is thought about
  4. sentence
    a string of words satisfying grammatical rules of a language
  5. appositive
    relating to or being in apposition
  6. verb
    a word denoting an action, occurrence, or state of existence
  7. direct object
    the object that receives the direct action of the verb
  8. indirect object
    the object that is the recipient or beneficiary of the action of the verb
  9. tense
    taut or rigid; stretched tight
  10. transitive verb
    a verb that requires an object in order to be grammatical
  11. intransitive verb
    a verb (or verb construction) that does not take an object
  12. active voice
    when the subject of a sentence performs the action
  13. passive voice
    when the subject of a sentence is a recipient of the action
  14. pronoun
    a function word that is used in place of a noun
  15. antecedent
    a preceding occurrence or cause or event
  16. demonstrative pronoun
    a pronoun that points out an intended referent
  17. reflexive pronoun
    a personal pronoun compounded with -self to show the agent's action affects the agent
  18. adjective
    the word class that qualifies nouns
  19. adverb
    a word that modifies something other than a noun
  20. clause
    a separate section of a legal document
  21. preposition
    a word before a noun or pronoun connecting to another word
  22. conjunction
    the state of being joined together
  23. interjection
    an abrupt emphatic exclamation expressing emotion
  24. participle
    a form of the verb used as an adjective
  25. gerund
    a noun formed from a verb
  26. infinitive
    the uninflected form of the verb
  27. prepositional phrase
    a phrase beginning with a preposition
