    are worse to see than tears.

    a spicy relish usually made with fruit, vinegar, and spices
    But we celebrate
    with our Indian friends.
    With spicy pulao and tart cranberry chutney,
    samosas, stuffed parathas,
    aloo chole,
    and although I’ve never tasted it,
    Tandoori Turkey.
  8. baste
    cover with liquid before cooking
    Then it’s baked in the oven, with frequent basting,
    until finally, hours later, it is brought out like a prize,
    brown and red and glistening.

    filled with a great quantity
    I miss Amma’s presence
    and her delicious carrot halwa,
    laden with ghee and plump raisins.

    We bring some tempting morsels to Amma,
    but she is too nauseous to touch them.

    Under hospital lights,
    Amma’s skin is dull,

    and learn that he must have his appendix out.

    Amma’s face is brighter,
    a dimmed moon
    slowly waxing.

    like growing them bigger here has sapped them of their flavor.

    Sometimes while we sit and watch Amma sleep,
    Prema Auntie talks about what Amma was like as a girl:

    Amma will have a chance.

    I pry it open

    in the moist June air.

    Your insistence on giving me your bone marrow was one of the bravest things I've ever seen anyone do. It showed me what a strong and steadfast young woman you've already grown into, kanna.

    I have one life,
