    They could be bought and sold as property. The practice, known as slavery, had begun.

    Others might break tools, set fire to property, work slowly, or stall for time inspecting something that was not important.

    Often, runaways were relatively privileged slaves who had served as river boatmen or coachmen and they had investigated their surroundings before their escape.

    The European settlers started creating boundaries, or lines that divide an area.

    He had unified dozens of groups of American Indians before the settlers arrived.

    It was located in a swampy area with polluted water and lots of insects that carried disease.
  8. reflect
    manifest or indicate
    The French and Indian War had begun. Its name reflected the fact that in North America, the British army fought both the French and their American Indian allies.
  9. ally
    a friendly nation
    An ally is a military partner.
  10. persuade
    cause somebody to adopt a certain position or belief
    Many American Indians were persuaded to support the French because they feared that the British colonies were spreading into their territories.
  11. treaty
    a written agreement between two states or sovereigns
    To end the war, France and England signed a treaty, which is a formed agreement between countries, in 1763.
