  1. militarism
    maintaining a strong force of armed services
    To protect their colonies and trade routes, European countries built powerful armies and navies, a policy known as militarism.
  2. trench
    a ditch dug as a fortification having a parapet of earth
    Trench warfare, or fighting from trenches, was not new, but trench warfare had never before happened on such a large scale.
  3. propaganda
    information that is spread to promote some cause
    Both sides used propaganda, or the spreading of ideas to promote or to harm a cause.

    compensation exacted from a defeated nation by the victors

    a form of government in which the ruler is unconstrained
    Totalitarianism is a form of government in which the government has total control over the lives of its people.
  9. fascism
    a political theory advocating an authoritarian government
    Fascism is a political system that stresses national strength, military might, and the belief that the state is more important than the individual.
  10. tariff
    a government tax on imports or exports
    To protect farmers, the U.S. government put tariffs on imported farm products.
  11. portray
