    After his death he was deified, or officially declared to be a god, and worshipped.
  2. succession
    the action or process of taking over an office or position
    Rome had no formal or set way to choose a new emperor. Succession was a serious problem.
  3. concrete
    a strong hard building material made with gravel and cement
    Concrete is a building material made by mixing cement (a gray powder made from different materials) with small stones, sand, and water.
  4. aqueduct
    a conduit that carries water over a valley
    An aqueduct is a channel that moves water over land.
  5. structure
    a complex entity made of many parts
    Using this new material, workers built large structures covered with domes.
  6. resurrect
    cause to become alive again
    Resurrection means coming back to life.
  7. isolated
    remote and separate physically or socially
    Other, smaller, groups of Jews withdrew from society and lived in isolated communities in the desert.
  8. baptism
    a sacrament signifying spiritual cleansing and rebirth
    Many of these groups practiced ritual cleansing by plunging into water. Christianity later adopted this ritual as baptism.
  9. authority
    persons who exercise control over others
    Roman authorities in Jerusalem worried about the large holiday crowds.
  10. crucifixion
    the act of executing by a method widespread in the ancient world; the victim's hands and feet are bound or nailed to a cross
    Crucifixion was a slow and painful method of execution.
  11. conversion
    a change of religion
    A conversion is a heartfelt change in one's opinions or beliefs.
  12. martyr
    one who voluntarily suffers death
    Persecution produced martyrs, or people who die for their beliefs.
