  1. inanimate
    not endowed with life
    The old ones had looked deep into the web that connects all animate and inanimate forms of life, and they recognized the great design of creation.
  2. authentic
    not counterfeit or copied
    Today we would say that the old abuelitos lived authentic lives.
  3. pueblo
    a Native American village in the southwestern United States
    Think of the high northern New Mexico villages, or the lonely ranches on the open llano. Think of the Indian pueblo which lies as solid as rock in the face of time.
  4. bystander
    a spectator who does not participate in some event
    His prayer was a meaningful action, because he was a participant with the forces that filled our world, he was not a bystander.
  5. adobe
    sun-dried brick used in hot dry climates
    I drove by my grandfather’s home, my uncles’ ranches, the neglected adobe washing down into the earth from whence it came.
  6. crystal
    a rock with regularly repeating internal structure

  7. splinter

  9. hearth

  10. victuals
    a source of food or nourishment

    Vittles is an alternate spelling of victuals. The words are pronounced in the same way: VI-tuhls.

    feeling or caused to feel uneasy and self-conscious
    Amy came in hastily, and looked rather abashed when she saw her sisters all waiting for her.
  12. stately
    refined or imposing in manner or appearance
    As she spoke, Amy showed the handsome flask which replaced the cheap one, and looked so earnest and humble in her little effort to forget herself that Meg hugged her on the spot, and Jo pronounced her ‘a trump’, while Beth ran to the window, and picked her finest rose to ornament the stately bottle.
  13. gruel
    a thin porridge
    Mrs. March gave the mother tea and gruel, and comforted her with promises of help, while she dressed the little baby as tenderly as if it had been her own.
