Personification is a figure of speech in which an animal, thing, force of nature, or idea is described as if it were human or is given human characteristics.

The speaker is the character who speaks in, or narrates, a poem—the voice assumed by the writer.

Tone is the emotional attitude toward the reader or subject implied by a literary work, such as serious or playful, sarcastic or sincere.

A pastoral poem or other literary work depicts the lives of shepherds or rural life in general and often draws a comparison between the innocence and serenity of the country and the misery and corruption of the city.

Enjambment is the act of continuing a statement beyond the end of a line in a poem.

Imagery is the figurative or descriptive language used to create word pictures, or images.

A conceit is an elaborate or unusual comparison of two things.

A paradox is a seemingly contradictory statement, idea, or event that actually may be true.
