  1. invocation
    the act of appealing for help
    Opening invocation to the Muse: The speaker of the poem asks the Muse for inspiration.
  2. lofty
    of high moral or intellectual value
    Lofty style: Elegant language stresses the nobility of the subject.
  3. objective
    undistorted by emotion or personal bias
    Objective tone: By keeping an emotional distance, the poet focuses attention on the story.
  4. meter
    a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in verse

    Many fields of study, work, and play have technical terms. These are words that may be familiar in general use but also have specialized meanings in a particular field.
  19. jargon
    technical terminology characteristic of a particular subject
    Like technical language, jargon refers to the specialized words and phrases used in a specific field.
  20. autobiographical
    relating to or in the style of an account of one's own life
    An autobiographical narrative describes real events in the writer's life and shares the lessons or wisdom the writer gained from the experiences.
  21. archetype
    something that serves as a model
    An archetype is a character, image, situation, or type of plot that appears in the literature of all cultures and eras.
  22. characterization
    a vivid verbal description
    Characterization is the art of portraying a character.
  23. direct
    straightforward in speech, manner, or behavior
    In direct characterization, the author tells the reader what a character is like.
  24. indirect
    not straight in manner or language or behavior
    In indirect characterization, the author gives clues about a character.
  25. archetypal
    of an original pattern on which other things are modeled
    Archetypal narrative patterns are storytelling structures that appear in literature from around the world.
  26. multimedia
    the use of many types of communication simultaneously

  27. persuasive
    intended or having the power to induce action or belief
    Write a persuasive essay in which you explain whether you think motherhood meets Campbell's definition of the heroic journey.
  28. argumentation
