  1. analyze
    consider in detail in order to discover essential features
    To analyze a poem, start by examining its words and phrasing.
  2. subordinate
    lower in rank or importance
    In her first job, she was in a subordinate role, but she later became chief executive of the company.
  3. literal
    limited to the explicit meaning of a word or text
    The original, literal meaning of "awful" is "full of awe," but now it means "terrible."
  4. determine
    find out or learn with certainty, as by making an inquiry
    We must do more than treat the symptoms; we must determine the cause of the illness.
  5. trivialize
    make insignificant
    Politicians tend to trivialize issues that they do not consider important.
  6. assert

  11. colloquial
    characteristic of informal spoken language or conversation
    When I was studying Spanish, I learned formal terms more easily than colloquial expressions.
  12. protagonist
    the principal character in a work of fiction
    Is the protagonist of the story really a talking dog?
  13. tension
    a state of mental or emotional strain or suspense
    News of an important announcement increased the level of tension at school.
  14. resolution
    something settled
    In the play's resolution, the thief is caught and taken to jail.
  15. epiphany
    a usually sudden insight, perception, or understanding of something
    That epiphany changed my life because it made my career choice clear.
