    someone indifferent to the busy world
    The term traces back to the Odyssey, wherein they would give Odysseus' men some lotus to eat to make Odysseus' men forget their troubles.

    an ancient city in Asia Minor that was the site of the Trojan War
    This city was sieged in the Trojan War, long before the Odyssey.
  6. Ithaca
    a Greek island to the west of Greece
    This city was the kingdom of Odysseus.
  7. Cyclops
    (Greek mythology) one of a race of giants having a single eye in the middle of their forehead
    Odysseus managed to outsmart one after one ate some of his men.
  8. Athena
    goddess of wisdom and useful arts and prudent warfare
    This goddess often assisted Odysseus in returning to Ithaca in the Odyssey.
  9. Poseidon
    the god of the sea and earthquakes in ancient mythology
    This god often delayed Odysseus' return to Ithaca in the Odyssey.
  10. Calypso
    the sea nymph who detained Odysseus for seven years
  11. Circe
    (Greek mythology) a sorceress who detained Odysseus on her island and turned his men into swine
  12. Homer
    ancient Greek epic poet who is believed to have written the Iliad and the Odyssey (circa 850 BC)
    This "author" may have been several authors, or one author, or maybe never existed in the first place.
  13. Achaian
    a member of one of four linguistic divisions of the prehistoric Greeks
    These people went off to fight in the Trojan War.

    someone engaged in or experienced in warfare
    Odysseus showed how much of one he was in the Odyssey.
  15. guile
    shrewdness as demonstrated by being skilled in deception
    It was often Odysseus' significant trait, along with his strength, that has allowed Odysseus to escape near death.

    intelligence, especially quickness and wittiness
  17. freeloader
    someone who takes advantage of the generosity of others
  18. Trojan War
    a great war fought between Greece and Troy
  19. Hades
    the god of the underworld in ancient mythology
  20. Iliad
    a Greek epic poem describing the siege of Troy
