  1. observation
the act of making and recording a measurement
The questions that drive scientific inquiry are based on observations.
  2. data
a collection of facts from which conclusions may be drawn
For several years, a mother has recorded the data of her daughter's growth by marking her height on a door-frame.
  3. inference
drawing a conclusion on the basis of circumstantial evidence
However, keep in mind that scientists are skeptical of inferences that "stretch" far beyond the data.
  4. generalization
reasoning from detailed facts to broad principles
This generalization that "all living things are made of cells" became part of what is known as the cell theory, one of the most important products of discovery science in the nineteenth century.
  5. hypothesis
a tentative insight that is not yet verified or tested
A reasonable hypothesis based on past experience is that the batteries in the flashlight are dead.
  6. variable
something that is likely to change
In the artificial snakes, the variable is the presence versus the absence of the colored rings.
  7. experiment
the act of conducting a controlled test or investigation
In science, evidence consists of a collected body of data from observations and experiments.
  8. evidence
an indication that makes something apparent
And such evidence doesn't begin to convince scientists until the observations and experiments have been repeated multiple times with similar results.
  9. theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the world
The theory of natural selection explains the evolution of the many cases of mimicry, as well as a variety of other adaptations of organisms to their environments.
  10. model
    a representative form or pattern
Analogies are another type of model in science.
  11. technology
applying scientific knowledge to practical problems
The direction technology takes depends less on the curiosity that drives basic science than it does on the current needs and wants of humans and on the social environment of the times.
