    The first time Lila made me an omelet she set off the smoke detector in the kitchen, which woke my dad up because blackout curtains and a closed door weren’t effective against the pandemonium that was Lila and me scrambling to scrape blackened cheese off the burner.

    understanding the nature of an event after it has happened
    In the history of Sundays with Lila, I don’t think we’ve ever had a bad time in hindsight, even if we weren’t having a great time in the moment.

    “Anyway, Pop Pop and I sent you a little pre-birthday gift. It’s not exactly what your sister got, but it’s lovely. There is an extra dress—just to bolster your closet until we get there.”

    I also know that people don’t particularly enjoy hearing about decomposition, and that the word putrefaction should never under any circumstances, even if it seems relevant to me, be brought up when people are eating.

    “What’s wrong with Stella?” I rarely know what someone is going to say before they say it, but this time I have a terrible suspicion.
