retailer

retailers

A retailer is a merchant or business owner who sells things to the public. Smaller retailers often struggle to compete with big chains and their low prices.

When you want to buy a book, you can head to your neighborhood retailer or find an online retailer to make your purchase. These shops sell retail goods — in other words, items that are generally bought in small amounts and used by the people who buy them, rather than resold. Retailer, with an original meaning of "seller of small quantities," comes from the Old French taillier, "to trim or cut."
