    Restraint systems include seat belts and air bags, as well as the vehicle's body, frame, steering column, and dash. An active restraint, such as a seat belt, requires that the occupants ready the system. A passive restraint, such as an air bag, operates without human activation.

    A transponder is a device that receives a signal, alters it, and then retransmits the signal in the altered state to another device. Some ignition keys have a built-in transponder: every time the vehicle is started, new signals are sent and altered. If the on-board computer does not receive the correct signal, it disables the starting and engine support systems.
