  1. damaged
    harmed or injured or spoiled
A few common engine mechanical problems include leaking gaskets, worn piston rings, burned and leaking valves, loose or worn engine bearings, worn timing chains, and damaged (cracked, broken, scored) engine parts.
  2. foul
    make impure
Oil-fouled spark plugs point to internal oil leakage into the engine combustion chambers. They are an indication that the engine has worn rings, worn or scored cylinder walls, or bad valve seals.
  3. warp

  4. diagnose
determine the nature of a problem or an illness
The color of the smoke can be used to diagnose the source of the problem. With a gasoline engine, blue-gray smoke indicates motor oil is entering the combustion chambers; black smoke indicates an extremely rich air-fuel mixture; white smoke (if not due to water condensation on a cool day) indicates an internal coolant leakage into the cylinders.
  5. interpret
    give an explanation to
Abnormal engine noises (hisses, knocks, rattles, clunks, popping) may indicate part wear or damage. You must be able to quickly locate and interpret engine noises and decide what repairs are needed. Like a doctor, you can use a stethoscope to amplify the noise and pinpoint the part producing it. If an automotive stethoscope is unavailable, use a long screwdriver.
