Full list of words from this list:

  1. discharge
    remove the unbalanced electricity from
The charging system reenergizes the battery. Modern cars use an alternator (or ac generator) to induce the current in the output windings. A dead or discharged battery is one of the most common reasons the starting system fails to crank the engine properly.
  2. electrolyte
    a solution that conducts electricity
  3. cell
a device that delivers an electric current
  4. battery
    a device that produces electricity
  5. shield
    a protective covering or structure
  6. temperature
the degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment
  7. parasitic
relating to an animal or plant that lives in or on a host
A parasitic load is any normal accessory circuit current draw present when all electrical devices are shut off (for example, the clock or alarm). If a vehicle sits unused for prolonged periods, the parasitic load can drain the battery enough to prevent starting.
  8. terminal
a contact on a device at which current enters or leaves
  9. cable
a conductor for transmitting electrical or optical signals
  10. vent
expel, release, or expose to air so as to cool or freshen
  11. trickle
the formation and falling of drops of liquid
  12. boost
the act of giving a push
  13. magnetic
having the properties of attracting iron or steel
Magnetic fields sometimes build up around a vehicle's body structure (due to antenna mounts, amplifiers, or repeated exposure to high-voltage power lines). This can cause problems with the electronic compass and other devices sensitive to magnetic fields. But this can be reversed with a degaussing or demagnetizing tool.
  14. pole
one of the two ends of a magnet where magnetism is strongest
  15. pinion
a gear designed to mesh with a larger wheel
The main parts of a starting motor are the armature (windings, core, shaft, commutator assembly), pinion drive assembly (pinion gear, overrunning clutch, sometimes a shift lever and solenoid), commutator end frame (for brushes, brush springs, shaft bushing), field frame (for coils and pole shoes), and drive end frame (for pinion gear; has bushing for armature shaft).
  16. clutch
a coupling that connects driving and driven parts
  17. switch
device for making or breaking the connections in a circuit
An open circuit will keep the electrical components in that section of the circuit from working. This could be caused by a broken wire, disconnected electrical connection, bad switch, or another problem that prevents current flow. A short circuit will show up as a blown fuse, burned fusible link, or open circuit breaker; this results when a hot wire (current-carrying wire) touches ground, which can be caused by cut or ruptured insulation.
  18. convert
change in nature, purpose, or function
The starting motor converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical or rotating energy to crank the engine.
  19. rectify
    convert into direct current
  20. biased
favoring one person or side over another
When a diode is connected to a voltage source in such a way that current passes through, it is forward biased and acts as a conductor. A reverse biased diode connects to a voltage source in a way that does not allow current to pass through; this acts as an insulator.
  21. scope
    an oscilloscope
An oscilloscope will precisely measure the operating voltages of an ignition system. It uses a television-type display screen to show voltage changes in relation to degrees of distributor or crankshaft rotation.
  22. coil
reactor consisting of a spiral of insulated wire that introduces inductance into a circuit
An ignition coil is a pulse-type transformer that is capable of producing short bursts of high voltage (between 4000 and 30,000 volts) to start combustion. The coil produces a low-current, high-voltage surge that jumps the rotor gap, passes through the secondary resistance wire, and jumps the spark plug gap.
  23. device
an instrumentality invented for a particular purpose
  24. spark
electrical conduction through a gas in an electric field
  25. ballast
a resistor inserted into a circuit to compensate for changes
  26. trigger
a device that activates or causes something to happen
  27. intensity
    the amount of energy transmitted
  28. backfire
a loud noise made by the explosion of fuel in an engine
  29. saturate
    infuse or fill completely
  30. limit
the greatest amount of something that is possible or allowed
  31. initial
    occurring at the beginning
  32. reverse
turned around in order or nature or effect
  33. polarity
the state of having an indicated electrical charge
  34. exterior
the region that is outside of something
  35. interior
the region that is inside of something
  36. element
one of the individual parts making up a composite entity
  37. filament
a thin wire heated by the passage of an electric current
  38. illuminate
    make lighter or brighter
  39. fluorescent
emitting light during exposure to external radiant energy
  40. panel
electrical device consisting of a flat insulated surface
  41. antenna
an electrical device for radio or television signals
  42. transmission
the gears that transfer power from an automobile engine
  43. hybrid
the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock
  44. vehicle
a conveyance that transports people or objects
  45. series
similar things placed in order or one after another
  46. parallel
of the simultaneous performance of multiple operations
  47. synchronous
occurring or existing at the same time
  48. fuse
a device that can interrupt the flow of electrical current
  49. nominal
insignificantly small; a matter of form only
  50. maximum
    the largest possible quantity
