In this first book of The Conjureverse series, eleven-year-old Ella Durand is admitted into the Arcanum Training Institute for Marvelous and Uncanny Endeavors, where she must prove to the magical sky-dwellers that her earthly background and Underworld abilities can be trusted.

    A very, very long time ago, the non-Fewel folk, as everyone used to be called, outsourced the divine responsibility of deathwork to Conjurors, and their gifts built this place.

    Marvellers who have committed crimes exist inside this powerful set of conjure cards. They're made from the threads of death and act as vessels, or containers. Once sentenced, you cross into the card and are held there in perpetuity or until you're released.

    “It's not an issue, Ella. We didn't want to worry you or your parents. There will always be people who try to thwart change,” Headmarveller Rivera said.

    Gumbo stretched under the table waiting for any wayward piece of chicken or lost sausage to come his way.

    The ceiling held a canopy of Underworld plants, flowers peeking through the foliage, appearing and disappearing in a game of hide-and-seek.

    a publication containing a variety of works
    Mama combed through her Red Book: A Compendium of Conjure Maps.
  37. sprawling
    spreading out in different directions
    Mama kissed her mother's cheek and spread a map of Louisiana across the table. An outline of the boot-shaped state pulsed on the thick paper, its sprawling cities and sleepy towns and rural outposts gleaming and glittering.
  38. pensive
    showing deep sadness
    More tears poured down, and Brownie stared at Ella with big, pensive eyes.
  39. breach
    an opening, especially a gap in a dike or fortification
    The Cards of Deadly Fate are reporting a breach. The entire prison is on lockdown. The disgraced yet legendary circus performer Gia Trivelino has escaped.

    I need a soul reaped from the Underworld. She died on June 18 at 9:22 p.m. I'll pay the top price—name it.
