  1. veteran
    a person who has served in the armed forces
    Many veterans, people who have fought in a war, wanted to start families.
  2. baby boom
    generation in United States born shortly after World War II
    So many babies were born in the years from 1945 to 1964 that historians call this wave of births after World War II the baby boom.
  3. suburb
    a residential district located on the outskirts of a city
    A suburb is a community outside a city.
  4. benefit
    something that aids or promotes well-being
    The G.I. Bill of Rights gave veterans funds for education, home loans, and other benefits.
  5. decade
    a period of 10 years
    By the end of the decade, more than 60 percent of Americans owned their homes.
  6. civil right
    right belonging to a person by reason of citizenship
    Civil rights are basic freedoms and protections, such as the right to fair trial.
  7. discrimination
    unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice
    Even in places where segregation was not the law, African Americans often faced discrimination, or the unfair treatment of people based on race or gender.
  8. integration
    incorporating a racial or religious group into a community
    It would years before integration, or the mixing of different groups, came to all American schools.
  9. sit-in
    a protest in which people occupy seats and refuse to move
    In 1960, four African American college students in North Carolina staged the first sit-in.
  10. challenge
    take exception to
    Parks challenged one of Montgomery's Jim Crow laws.
  11. alternative
    one of a number of things from which only one can be chosen
    "We have no alternative but to protest," King said.
  12. minority
    a group of people who differ from a larger group
    A minority group is a group that is distinct from the majority, or largest group in a society.
  13. affirmative action
    a policy designed to redress past discrimination
    The goal of affirmative action is to make up for past discrimination. For example, businesses might try to hire more women or minorities than in the past.
  14. impeach
    charge with an offense committed while in office
    Nixon feared that he would be impeached, or charged with a crime, and maybe removed from office by Congress.
  15. decline
    a condition inferior to an earlier condition
    Two years into Reagan's presidency, the nation fell deeper into a recession, or economic decline.
  16. expansion
    the act of increasing in size or volume or quantity or scope
    Reagan supporters said this was "the longest peacetime expansion in American history."
