  1. medieval
    relating to or belonging to the Middle Ages
    Historians call this period of European history between ancient times and modern times—roughly from 500 CE to 1500 CE—the Middle Ages. Its culture is called medieval civilization, from the Latin words meaning "middle age."

    A missionary is a person who tries to convert others to a particular religion.
  9. generally
    usually; as a rule
    Converts generally chose Christianity freely.
  10. saint
    a person who has died and has been canonized
    After Patrick's death, the Catholic Church recognized him as a saint, or an especially holy person.
  11. monastery
    the residence of a religious community
    A monastery is a secluded community where men called monks focus on prayer and scripture.
  12. convent
    a religious residence especially for nuns
    A convent is a religious community for women known as nuns.
  13. sacrament
    a formal religious ceremony conferring a specific grace
    The sacraments are the sacred rites of the Christian Church, such as baptism and communion.
