  1. industrial
    of or relating to commercial enterprise
    The new revolution—the Industrial Revolution—was a long, slow process that completely changed the way goods were produced and where many people worked and lived.

    To set up and operate a spinning mill required large amounts of capital, or invested money.
  3. capitalist
    a person who invests assets in a business
    A capitalist is a person who invests in a business to make a profit.

    Before the growth of factories, skilled workers, or artisans, were proud of the goods they made.
  11. union
    an employee organization that bargains with an employer
    In the 1820s and 1830s, artisans in each trade united to form trade unions.
  12. strike
    refusal to work in protest against low pay or bad conditions
    In a strike, union workers refuse to do their jobs until managers agree to address their concerns.
  13. organize
    form or join an organized group of workers
    The success of trade unions encouraged other workers to organize.
  14. immigrant
    a person who comes to a country in order to settle there
    By the late 1840s, many factory workers in the North were immigrants. An immigrant is a person who enters a new country in order to settle there.
  15. famine
    a severe shortage of food resulting in starvation and death
    There was little left for the Irish to eat. This situation caused a famine, or severe food shortage. Thousands of people died of starvation.
  16. nativist
    advocating the perpetuation of native societies
    Not everyone welcomed the flood of immigrants. One group of Americans, called nativists, wanted to preserve the country for native-born, white citizens.
  17. discrimination
    unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice
    Discrimination is a policy or an attitude that denies equal rights to certain groups of people.
  18. boom
    a state of economic prosperity
    The cotton gin led to a boom, or swift growth, in cotton production.
  19. cultivate
    prepare for crops
    Cotton farmers needed new land to cultivate, or prepare for planting.
  20. cash crop
    a cultivated plant that is grown to be sold for profit
    Cotton was the South's most profitable cash crop.
