  1. gentry
    the most powerful members of a society
    At the top of society stood the gentry. The gentry included wealthy planters, merchants, ministers, successful lawyers, and royal officials.
  2. middle class
    a socioeconomic group that is neither wealthy nor poor
    Below the gentry were the middle class. The middle class included farmers who worked their own land, skilled craft workers, and some tradespeople.
  3. tolerant
    showing respect for the rights or opinions of others
    Still, the growth of so many new churches forced colonists to become more tolerant of people with different beliefs.
  4. apprentice
    someone who works for an expert to learn a trade
    Boys whose parents wished them to learn a trade or craft served as apprentices.
  5. assumption
    a statement that is held to be true
    In the 1600s, European thinkers tried to question common assumptions and to base their understanding of the world on reason and logic.
  6. enlightenment
    education that results in the spread of knowledge
    Because these thinkers believed in the light of human reason, the movement that they started is known as the Enlightenment.
  7. libel
    a false and malicious publication
    Zenger was put on trial for libel—the act of publishing a statement that may unjustly damage a person's reputation.
  8. mercantilism
    a system of increasing wealth through colonization and trade
    Like other European nations at the time, England believed that its colonies should benefit the home country. This belief was part of an economic theory known as mercantilism.
  9. export
    a commodity sold to a foreign country
    Exports are goods sent to markets outside a country.
  10. import
    commodities bought from a foreign country
    Imports are goods brought into a country.
  11. navigation
    guidance of ships, planes, or vehicles from place to place
    The Navigation Acts regulated trade between England and its colonies in order to ensure that only England benefited from trade with its colonies.
  12. prosperous
    very lively and profitable
    As a result, New England became a prosperous shipbuilding center.
  13. bribe
    payment made to corrupt a person in a position of trust
    Bribes made customs officials look the other way.
  14. legislature
    an assembly that makes, amends, or repeals laws
    This example, as well as the tradition of representative government established in the Magna Carta, led the colonies to create a legislature soon after founding. A legislature is a group of people, usually elected, that has the power to make laws.
