    a narrative poem of popular origin
    Dating from the twelfth century, a ballad is a traditional form of narrative poetry that may be recited or sung.
  2. rhyme
    correspondence in the final sounds of two or more lines
    Slant rhyme, in which the rhyming sounds are similar but not identical, is common to many ballads, such as “Lord Randall” and “Bonny Barbara Allan.”
  3. refrain
    part of a song or poem that recurs at regular intervals
