  1. drama
    the literary genre of works intended for the theater
    A drama, or play, is a story that is written to be performed in front of an audience.
  2. act
    a single division of a play, opera, or ballet
    Dramas are divided into shorter sections called acts.
  3. scene
    a subdivision of an act of a play
    A scene is like a little play by itself.
  4. script
    a written version of a play or other dramatic composition
    In a script, or written form of a play, each character's name appears before his or her dialogue.
  5. nuance
    a subtle difference in meaning or opinion or attitude
    Two words that have the same denotation may have different nuances, or slight shades of difference in their meanings.
  6. characterization
    a vivid verbal description
    Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character.
  7. inference
    a conclusion you can draw based on known evidence
    An inference is a logical assumption made about information in a text that is not directly stated.
  8. plagiarism
    taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own
    Presenting someone else's ideas, research, or opinion as your own, even if you use different words, is plagiarism—the equivalent of academic stealing.
  9. context
    discourse that surrounds and helps explain a word or passage
    Context clues are other words and phrases that appear in nearby text.
  10. consonance
    the repetition of sounds especially at the ends of words
    Consonance is the repetition of final consonant sounds in stressed syllables with different vowel sounds, as in sit and cat.
  11. syntax
    the grammatical arrangement of words in sentences
    The organization of words into sentences is syntax.
  12. autobiography
    a book or account of your own life
    An autobiography is a true account of events and experiences written by the person who directly experienced them.
  13. mood
    the prevailing psychological state
    Writers' word choices also help to create mood, or atmosphere
  14. anecdote
    short account of an incident
    An anecdote is a brief story about an interesting, amusing, or strange event.
  15. epic
    a long narrative poem telling of a hero's deeds
    The ancient version of the Odyssey is an epic—a long poem about heroes.
