  1. cell wall
a rigid layer of polysaccharides enclosing a plant membrane
Cotton and linen fibers are both natural fibers made from cellulose, a compound found in plant cell walls.
  2. prokaryote
    a unicellular organism lacking a membrane-bound nucleus
Cyanobacteria lack a nucleus and therefore are prokaryotes
  3. eukaryote
an organism of one or more cells with membrane-bound nuclei
Eukaryotes have many distinguishing features, including the fact that they keep their genes in a special compartment known as the cell nucleus.
  4. nucleus
a part of the cell responsible for growth and reproduction
Only living cells contain an intact nucleus, complete with woolly mammoth DNA.
  5. ribosome
a particle in a cell that helps synthesize proteins
Ribosomes are absolutely essential for life, generating all cellular proteins required for growth.
  6. cytoplasm
the substance inside a cell, not including the nucleus
Food particles, wastes, and other substances may also be present in the cytoplasm.
  7. cell membrane
a thin membrane enclosing the cytoplasm of a cell
The epithelial cell membrane allows the water of the blood with certain salts in solution to pass, but rejects some proteins.
  8. mitochondrion
part of a cell involved in energy production
Mitochondria are structures in cells that produce cellular energy.
  9. chloroplast
organelle in which photosynthesis takes place
The photosynthetic pigment inside chloroplasts, chlorophyll, is where the green color comes from.
  10. lysosome
a membrane-bound organelle containing digestive enzymes
Lysosomes contain enzymes that break down wastes to be transported out of cell.
  11. plasma membrane
a thin membrane enclosing the cytoplasm of a cell
Ms. Alford worked in her classroom last Tuesday, carefully hanging an animal-cell poster illustrating the plasma membrane and Golgi complex with rolled masking tape. New York Times (Aug 7, 2011)
