For a voracious reader, so much can be learned, so many experiences can be gained, and so much insight can be achieved, second-hand, through books. I knew that as a kid. And then I discovered that there was a perfect word to describe such learning!
My college professor used this word frequently in my freshman year "International Perspectives" course, assuming that we all understood what it meant. i was unfamiliar with this very important word and was clueless for a good part of the class.
It was the Dictionary.com word of the day on the day of my first Executive Board Meeting. I had never heard of the word before that day. The company officers challenged each other to fit that word into their presentations or discussions at the meeting -- and one of us did! I can't help but chuckle now whenever I encounter that word.
