सन 1911 तक भारत की राजधानी बंगाल हुआ करता था। सन 1905 में जब बंगाल विभाजन को लेकर अंग्रेजो के खिलाफ बंग-भंग आन्दोलन के विरोध में बंगाल के लोग उठ खड़े हुए तो अंग्रेजो ने अपने आपको बचाने के लिए के कलकत्ता से हटाकर राजधानी को दिल्ली ले गए और 1911 में दिल्ली को राजधानी घोषित कर दिया।
