shishito pepper

/ʃɪˈʃidoʊ ˈpɛpər/
IPA guide

Other forms: shishito peppers

A shishito pepper is a small, barely spicy vegetable that's found in Japanese cuisine. Most shishito peppers are green, but watch out for the red ones — they can be hot!

Slender, wrinkly shishito peppers are often roasted and eaten as a tasty, savory snack. They're usually not too spicy, but if they have ripened from green to red, their heat and bite can surprise you. In Japanese, shishito is a combination of shishi, "lion," and tōgarashi, "pepper," named for the resemblance of the pepper's tip to a tiny lion head.
