If you have ten words left to study for a test, you have ten words remaining, or ten remaining words. Remaining means what's left or what hasn't been done yet.

In a basketball game, you'll often hear an announcer mention how many minutes are remaining in the quarter or the game. If you have two remaining grandparents, it means two of your grandparents have died and two remain alive. The money you have in your wallet is what's remaining from your allowance.
