Medicare

/ˌmɛdəˈkɛər/
IPA guide

Medicare is a health insurance program for people in the U.S. who are over 65 or have certain disabilities. If your grandfather needs to see his doctor, it's probably covered by Medicare.

Since 1965, Medicare has covered some health care costs for older people who are legal U.S. residents. Americans who have certain disabilities or medical conditions can also qualify for the program. Medicare helps people pay for medical expenses, including doctor visits and hospital stays, although it only covers about half of these costs. The word Medicare was coined in Canada in 1962.
