2019 has just begun, and it's already shaping up to be a banner year.

And we don't just mean the 100+ Vocabulary Bowl Champions banners that'll be awarded to the top schools in every state and division in a few months' time. We're talking about the record-setting amount of word learning that happened in January. Students from Phoenix to Philadelphia, Fort Collins to Fort Lauderdale, and everywhere in between, kicked off the new year with an upsurge in effort. The final tally was an eye-popping total of 4,766,080 words mastered in just 31 days. That's an average of more than 153,000 words each day.

Middle School Action: Tenacious Timberwolves Triumph

Tomahawk Creek Middle School is no stranger to the Vocabulary Bowl big leagues. The Timberwolves were Virginia Bowl Champions and Middle School Runner-up last season, to name just a few of their accolades. In the 2018-19 season, TCMS has dominated in their state, but they've been out-mastered on the national stage by Margate and McAuliffe, who've been virtually neck-and-neck in their race for the Middle School Champion title. But the Timberwolves kicked it into high gear last month, mastering 30,952 words — enough to edge out their rivals and take the top spot in the division for January.

The rest of the Middle School Division leaderboard saw the usual upheaval, with four new schools ousting December's leaders from the Top Ten. To see how things stacked up, check out the January Middle & Elementary School Roundup video below.

High School Action: Eagles Still Perched At No. 1

Defending North American Champions Etiwanda High School rebounded from a minor slump that we'll chalk up to the winter doldrums. The Eagles mastered 66,352 words in January to claim their record-setting 15th monthly Champions banner. EHS is also safely perched atop the overall leaderboard for the season with a 55,000 word lead, and unless something earth-shattering happens, they appear to have a lock on a historic three-peat.

Although the top spot is Etiwanda's domain this season, the rest of the Top Ten ranks in the High School Division are still up for grabs, with four new schools knocking out December's leaders. For a full recap, check out the January High School Roundup video below.
